Poster examples

The purpose of a film poster is to advertise the film and increase the potential audience. They usually do this by informing the audience about one key feature of the film that will draw the auidences attention or smaller features that will intregue the audience. Film posters are a very important way of advertising films because they can be placed almost anywhere; from billboards to bustops and now even on social network sites such as facebook. If the film in one in a series it will often have a similar style or feature to its predecessor (such as the white background of many 'saw' posters) so that it is immideatly recognisable. It also should keep in line with the key conventions of horror film postrs so that the genre is easily clear even at a glance. As a poster is only a still image it can only hint at what the film is about, thus making the main image on it key.

The key conventions of a movie poster for the horror genre are:
  • A dark colour scheme (usually black, red and white). Red is commonly used as it can symbolise blood and vlack is often used as it symbloises darkness, which many associate with fear (fear of the dark).
  • The release date of the film
  • A website for the film
  • Low light/dark images which disguies the character
  • One large image to grab the audiances attention.
